A free full-text Al-Madinah Mushaf is now available in many formats. Al-Madinah Mushafs are the most sacred and important books in Islam, for they contain Allah’s message to mankind. They were revealed many centuries ago and they continue to be the only source of divine knowledge for Muslims everywhere, including scholars and illiterates alike. "There is no other book which we call 'The Book' besides the Qur'an," says Yasin Chotib; a famous Indonesian Islamic scholar. "The word 'book' is not applied indiscriminately: it's reserved for what we believe to be God's words. Anything outside the Qur'an is not a book even if it's written in the same way." Printing of Qur'ans began in early Islam, following the Caliph Uthman, who set about collecting and compiling the various versions of verses which had been written down on various materials. The most accurate copies were selected and sent to Kufa, Basrah, Damascus, and Mecca. From there they began to be distributed throughout Arabia. Although there are slight variations in style among these early Qur'ans - some are more ornate than others - all maintain the same basic format with chapters arranged in descending order of length with respect to their longest chapter. This gradual reduction in size is called "tanwir." From the beginning, two Qurans were accepted as the most accurate copies available. These are now stored at Mecca's al-Masjid al-Haram and in Istanbul, Turkey, at Topkapi Palace. They are known as the Mushaf Uthmani (or Uthman Copy) and Mushaf 'Ali (or Ali Copy), named after their respective owners. Both these copies have tanwir of only one chapter per page with no decoration or embellishment except for modest colored dots to highlight vowel sounds. The Mushafs themselves are made of animal skin, which was the only material available for writing. This style of writing is called "black-letter" because the letters are black on a white background. The Mushaf 'Uthmani contains no chapters, verses or ayat in the middle, while the Mushaf 'Ali does. Both contain 114 surahs (chapters) with 3 initials in between for each surah. They are divided by verses, with certain divisions being labeled "the beginning of a sūrah," "the end of a sūrah," or "a very short sūrah." These divisions vary among copies, but all contain at least two margins per page to allow for corrections. Some copies have more blank spaces left within the text for this purpose. The earlier edition of the Mushaf 'Uthmani is called the "Sūrah al-Asr" or "the Sun" for Uthman's time being reigning as the Caliph overseeing it. The later, less perfect version is called Sūrah al-Tawba (lit. "repentance") or "the month of reconciliation." The Mushaf 'Ali has tanwir to only one sūrah, Sūrah al-Muhajat (lit. "Praise)," stating that it was revealed in Ummul-Qura (that is Mecca). cfa1e77820
